Abstract

To our distinguished readers,

Welcome to the latest issue of the Public Health Review!

Our spotlight writer is Sara Bolnick, whose policy proposal, "Peeling back the layers: American Indians and the opioid crisis in Hennepin County," explains the development and complexity of a public health problem right here in the Twin Cities. Bolnick’s role as the Development Manager at the Community-University Health Care Center provides her with insight into the challenges faced by American Indian community members, who are ten times more likely to die of opioid overdose than their White counterparts. In her article, she describes two policy options that support affordable and culturally responsive addiction services. Bolnick ultimately recommends increasing Medicaid reimbursement for Federally Qualified Health Centers to improve access to integrated care for opioid use disorder. At the time of publication, a bill doing so had been adopted in Minnesota! This is public health in action. The Public Health Review wants to hear from you: what are the problems and injustices in your communities? How can we best inform and drive policy to improve health outcomes and achieve health equity?

Our sincerest gratitude to the other authors, our Editorial Board, our Advisory Board, our colleagues at the University of Minnesota Libraries Publishing, and our reviewers, whose hard work and dedication have made this issue possible. We also want to extend special appreciation to the incoming Editorial Board: Madison Anderson, Sarah Bennis, Maria Bertrand, Abby Fink, Madeline Geitz, Angela Han, Cole Hanson, Danielle Hinz, Hannah Kinzer, and Talia Wiggen. Welcome!

This issue spans a range of public health topics: policy responses to the opioid crisis, palliative care, concussions in youth athletes, Yellow Fever Virus, health care access for people with Autism Spectrum Disorder, and postpartum support for refugee mothers. This demonstrates public health’s interdisciplinary nature. We hope that the journal encourages you, our readers, to consider how you can support the public health of your communities. Of course, we want you to share your work with us—we can’t wait to hear from you!

On behalf of the Public Health Review Editorial Board, I hope you enjoy this issue!

Warm regards,

Sarah Perez-Sanz
