Formatting Requirements
Survive & Thrive: A Journal for Medical Humanities and Narrative as Medicine has no general rules about the formatting of articles upon initial submission. There are, however, rules governing the formatting of the final submission. See Final Manuscript Preparation Guidelines for details. It is ultimately the responsibility of the author to produce an electronic version of the article as a high-quality PDF (Adobe's Portable Document Format) file, or a Microsoft Word, WordPerfect or RTF file that can be converted to a PDF file.
It is understood that the current state of technology of Adobe's Portable Document Format (PDF) is such that there are no, and can be no, guarantees that documents in PDF will work perfectly with all possible hardware and software configurations that readers may have.
Final Manuscript Preparation Guidelines for Survive & Thrive: A Journal for Medical Humanities and Narrative as Medicine
This document provides details on format requirements for manuscript submission to Survive & Thrive: A Journal for Medical Humanities and Narrative as Medicine.
Because this journal publishes electronically, page limits are not as relevant as they are for print publications. We are happy, therefore, to let authors take advantage of this greater "bandwidth" to include material that they would otherwise have to cut to get into a print journal. This said, authors should exercise some discretion with respect to length and/or file size.
Formatting Requirements for Text Submissions
Do not include a title page or abstract—these will be added during the submission process and become part of the final document upon publication.
Do not include page numbers, headers, or footers. These will be added by the editors.
Write your article in English; parallel text submissions, English and foreign language, are accepted.
Authors should use proper, standard English grammar. The Elements of Style by William Strunk, Jr. and E. B. White (now in its fourth edition) is the "standard" guide, but other excellent guides (e.g., The Chicago Manual of Style, University of Chicago Press) exist as well.
Page size should be 8.5 x 11-inches.
All margins (left, right, top and bottom) should be 1.5 inches (3.8 cm), including your tables and figures.
Single space your text.
Use a single column layout with left margin justified.
Font:
For personal narratives, essays, or scholarly articles:
Main Body—12 pt. Serif font, such as Goudy Old Style, Palatino, Book Antiqua, Garamond, or Georgia.
Footnotes—10 pt. Serif font, such as Goudy Old Style, Palatino, Book Antiue, or Georgia.
Title and section headings—16 pt. and 12 pt. respectively, either in the same Serif font used in the Main Body or in a Sans Serif font, such as Arial or Helvetica.
Use italics for emphasis and foreign language words and phrases; use bold where appropriate for emphasis. Avoid the use of underline.
Limited use of colored fonts are acceptable where appropriate. However, appreciate that this will cause problems for some displays and readers, especially when printing on a black and white printer.
For poetry:
Body—12 pt. Serif font—such as Goudy Old Style, Palatino, Book Antiqua, Garamond, or Georgia—12 pt. Sans Serif font as appropriate—such as Arial or Helvetica.
For graphic stories:
Use any appropriate 12 pt. font, such as Comic Sans. If you use a unique font, please embed the font in a PDF document and submit the PDF.
If figures or images are included, use high-resolution figures, preferably encoded .jpg images or as encapsulated PostScript(eps).
If your submission includes images or works of art by others that are covered by copyright, please contact the copyright owner to obtain written permission to use the image or art. There may be royalty fees for the use of copyrighted images or art for which you will be responsible. The editors recommend the use of Creative Commons licensed images, with attribution to the creator, whenever possible.
If your submission includes tables and a large table does not fit on a standard printed page (8.5 x 11 inches), consider submitting the table as a supplemental document as part of the submission process.
If you submission includes footnotes or references, consistently use a recognized standard citation method:
Copyedit your manuscript.
When possible, there should be no pages where more than a quarter of the page is empty space.
Avoid widow or orphan text, i.e., ending a page with the first line of a paragraph or beginning a page with the last line of a paragraph.
Submit your manuscript, including tables, figures, appendices, etc., as a single file (Word, RTF, or PDF files are accepted).
