Abstract

This piece is an excerpt from a zine exploring how literacy, embodiment, and climate literacy intersect in the classroom. The zine reflects on the role place-based learning has in my teaching practices and some of the challenges I face trying to incorporate it into my teaching. I initially created the zine during a writing retreat with other Florida-based educators. A major theme that kept coming up over the course of the retreat was shared vulnerability — that is being willing to share our stories and hear the stories of others. Perceptive and proficient readers need more than “skill and drill.” Students need to engage with the stories of the people and places around them to develop their literacy skills and their understanding of the environments they live in.
