Using Social Media to Increase Student Engagement

Abstract
This session will focus on how to use social media channels to engage students inside and outside the classroom. Social media can be used to create collaborative learning opportunities, reach diverse learners, and increase social skills, content creation and assess student learning. Social media channels that will be covered in this session include Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Blogs, Wiki, YouTube and live streaming apps like Periscope, Meerkat, Facebook Mentions and Blabs. Real classroom ideas, best practices and examples will be provided.

Robin O'Callaghan is a Senior Instructional Designer at Winona State University and Co-Coordinator of the Minnesota Online Quality Initiative. She is currently teaching for WSU and Intro to Social Media graduate course at the University of Florida. She has more than 10 years of teaching experience in online and face-to-face courses.
