Digital Badge Credentialing Value: From An Employer Perspective

Abstract

Digital badging is an emerging credentialing system designed to validate skills and competencies achieved in nontraditional and informal education settings. Badge initiatives have emerged as pragmatic solution to reimagine education and build a highly skilled workforce. The success of education systems related to workforce development hold substantial social and economic consequence for government, employers, and job applicants. Employer acceptance is viewed as a driving force in both the current development and long-term success of digital badges. This poster presentation will l present findings of a qualitative case-study that explored employer perceptions on the utility of digital badges and the acceptability of job applicants with earned badge credentials.

Dr. Constance C. Erickson, Capella University

Constance Erickson, Ph.D. served as the Technology and Information Systems Director for over ten year and recently transitioned into a Districtwide Assessment position in the Burnsville-Eagan-Savage School District. As a champion of lifelong learning, she acquired a B.S. degree in Telecommunications Management at St. Mary’s University, an M.A. in Organizational Management at Concordia University and Doctor of Philosophy in Information Technology at Capella University with a specialization in the Information Technology in Education. She also hold a Post-Master's Certificate in College Teaching.
