Abstract

In this presentation Dr. Wiley will clearly define and explain the concept, philosophy, and ethic of "open," including the 5Rs Framework. He will then review the empirical literature on the impacts of adopting open educational resources and the practice of open pedagogy, providing thought tools, including the "learning outcomes per dollar" analysis technique and the "driving the airplane" analogy.

David Wiley, Lumen Learning

Dr. David Wiley is the Chief Academic Officer of Lumen Learning, an organization dedicated to increasing student success and improving the affordability of education through the adoption and effective use of open educational resources. He is also currently the Education Fellow at Creative Commons and adjunct faculty in Brigham Young University's graduate program in Instructional Psychology and Technology. As an academic, Dr. Wiley has received numerous recognitions for his work, including an NSF CAREER grant, an appointment as a Nonresident Fellow in the Center for Internet and Society at Stanford Law School, and designation as Researcher of the Year in the Utah State University College of Education and Human Services. As a social entrepreneur, Dr. Wiley has founded or helped start numerous entities including Lumen Learning, Degreed, Neumont University, and the Open High School of Utah.
