Session Description

This presentation is designed for participants to sharpen their skills in facilitating and teaching in web-based environments. The presenters will use an interactive format by presenting with a web-based tool (WebEx) to demonstrate how engagement strategies can be applied. Participants will learn about best practices and apply advanced teaching techniques to their work. Resources will be shared with participants, including a rubric for evaluating participant engagement in webinars. Note: Participants do not need to be familiar with WebEx but should have experience with teaching and/or facilitating with a web-based tool.

Session objectives:

  • Increase understanding of research related to teaching in distance learning environments
  • Recognize techniques for engaging audiences in online learning environments
  • Define a process to determine teaching tools and techniques for distance learning

Brief Biography of Primary Presenter

Kari Robideau has over 20 years of experience working with children, youth and families. She is currently an Extension Educator, Associate Extension Professor, with the University of Minnesota Extension Center for Youth Development, focusing on teaching, program development and scholarship in distance learning technologies. Her development model for non-credit adult learners is utilized internally to create cohort-based courses and asynchronous modules. Recently, her expertise was sought to lead the development of an online course for the North Central Region Volunteer Specialists. Kari has partnered with NDSU's Center for Youth Development since 2010 to offer a year-long Youth Development Webinar series.

Karen Matthes has been providing technology training and support for the UM Extension for over 20 years. With Extension employees located throughout Minnesota, she uses distance technology whenever possible to deliver training on topics like web conferencing, video and presentation technologies. She is most interested in assisting educators use supported technology tools effectively to improve teaching and learning.
